Aileen served as a substitute for the library assistant for a week with me as the librarian.
I adored her company, her joy and enthusiasm for learning.
I kept a letter she wrote to me about her experience she had at the HS library because it was the most profound letter I ever received from a colleague.
She explained how she always wanted to learn how to work in a library and that she was incredibly inspired and motivated to pursue a new field in librarianship. 'It was her best substitute week ever', she explained.
A soft spoken, lovely lady. I am so sad. Blessings to the family of Aileen. You raised a special person and she is missed.

Aileen was a very special person and she will be missed by so many who came into her life. She sang from her soul and she wrote from the heart. Aileen was always so brave when she recited her poetry and sang in front of an audience. She always thought of everyone first even though she earned the spotlight. We will miss you Aileen as from your song, Just to See You again.

Aileen was brilliant--a gifted writer, an insightful observer of the world around her. I am grateful to have known her over the years, first as a student and then as a friend. As her teacher I got to see her enthusiasm for Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and dozens of other touchstones in the history of culture as--avid and probing--she dug into the heart of what was important in whatever material there was. Right now on my nightstand sits a copy she gave me of the collected works of Jorge Luis Borges, with her occasional notes in the margin. That's who she was: someone in conversation with the artists and thinkers of the past.
That someone can have such gifts and still find happiness elusive is a frustrating mystery. She had, by her account, a wonderful family, and by everyone's account, a great mind. She was creative. She had a lovely singing voice. She had an intellectual curiosity and a kind of longing for knowledge and experience. She leaves behind some wonderful memories for those of us who knew her.
One that comes to my mind just now is this. On a First Friday maybe in 2019, she was performing in Oldtown Salinas with the band--Kayne, Tim, John, Anna, Todd--and she was singing one of the songs she wrote herself. A few of us in the audience had heard it earlier when she performed it on campus, so we started singing along (Passersby must have figured it was a popular song that everyone knew). Aileen became so embarrassed by the attention that she lost her place for a moment, laughing.
We will miss her. I will miss her.

Aileen was my student at Hartnell College, but she was more than just an ordinary student. She won a poetry contest and worked with me on our school's literary journal, The Homestead Review as a contributing editor. Aileen was always very generous with her time and always willing to help other students. She kept in touch with me over the years and I felt proud of her many accomplishments.
The last time I saw Aileen she seemed happy. She talked about her sister and her nephews and how much joy they brought her.
I will never forget Aileen. I will make sure her memory lives on in the various poetry endeavors I direct. I am deeply saddened by her death. She was the best student I ever had. She will be missed.
With deepest condolences,
Maria Garcia Teutsch
